I have been so pleased to hear the outcry regarding the removal of Marc Steiner and had privately resolved on “No Marc - No money” before I saw that mentioned in the description of your recent meeting. Thank you for doing a good job!
I and my wife have been member-owners of WJHU/WYPR for over 15 years. Recent events, going back six years or so, have made me wonder about the public vs corporate relationship of the station. Now, with the very controversial dismissal of Marc Steiner (not just the Marc Steiner Show), I wonder only at the future and what should we, the public expect. However, one of the silliest things I’ve seen in this whole mess is the “No Marc-No Money” idea. I sense that this plays right into the hands of the guarantors of the five million dollar loan, so far, evidently paid by my and other members public donations. If we default on the loan, they have to pick it up. Well, big deal for them, after we’ve paid most of it off! And besides, if I truly believe that my investment emboldens the concept of publicly owned radio, why would I pretend that I am the victim when the management messes up? We, the public, should simply demand a change in management and upon the complete amortizing of the loan, which releases the guarantors from obligation, re-configure the Board of Directors of WYPR to our liking, through the auspices of the Community Advisory Board. Until then, who in their right mind thinks Marc Steiner even wants to return to the station? Come on, protesters, wise up before you rise up. The victory is too important to leave to mere venting. Protest is good, don’t get me wrong. But at some point we must actually solve the problem ourselves. You protest to the powers that be only when you don’t have the power. As a matter of fact, in this case, we do.
